UPDATE

After day one of trip I realized that stopping at every spot to get a photo is not possible when I am on a tight timeline.  The first day was supposed to be a mere four hour drive and it ended up being over seven.  For this reason, a lot of the pictures were captured by my partner as I drove by each site.

I have started editing my photos.  It was utterly impossible to post them live, or even at the end of each day of driving due to exhaustion so I’ve decided to post each image as I finish up with them in photoshop.

TRAVELS

My final project for New Media Production is based on the technologies made known to us during class.  Due to my early absence from the term (for the purpose of research and filming of my thesis project) I decided to incorporate the long road trip ahead with the class, as this is the time we are supposed to be working on our projects.  The project will document the road trip and create a new narrative based on tourist attractions along the way.  I realized this project on a recent trip to New York City where, although I was a tourist as well, the ways in which other tourists reacted to their new environments was humorous to me.  In particular: poses.  Everyone has a “camera pose,” or a certain smile or reaction to the presence of a camera, and many are particularly funny.  What I found in an old set of snapshots from a road trip with a friend was an image that started off as a joke, and ended up being the highlight of our trip.  Our poses reflected pop culture attractions.  Shown below, I consistently used “the beach is thata way.”  It was all in good fun, and for the most part, other than a change in clothes, the pose remained the same.

The above image has now been manipulated to exclude the background so that I may insert myself into every photo I capture in the same pose as shown below.

In this way I am able to author every image I capture while inserting myself into the scene through user-friendly technologies.

It is my intent to create a narrative through the mapping of tourist attractions while using a familiar image in each.  Of course, the manipulated images are playful and will be shown as such…
